The national museum has decided to erect a statue in front of its entrance. They have to choose between Stamford Raffles and Tan Tock Seng. If you were working for the museum, who would you choose? Why?
I will choose Tan Tock Seng because he was a philanthropist and had contributed much to Singapore's people. He helped set up a hospital that provided the poor with medical care at little or no cost. He also buried the bodies of the poor and sick at his own expense even though they were not related to him at all.
I did not choose Stamford Raffles as foreign tourists who visit the museum may already know about him and not about Tan Tock Seng. I feel that the contributions by Tan Tock Seng should also be made known to the foreign people. On top of that, Raffles has already had his statue erected outside the Victoria Theatre.
